Haute-Marne department

Introduction

The organizing authority

The Haute-Marne Departmental Council administers a territory that has the following characteristics:
• 6211 km²
• 32 cantons and 532 communes and associated communes
• 3 districts
• 189,000 inhabitants

Prefecture: Chaumont.
Sub-prefectures: Saint-Dizier and Langres.

Situated in the southern Champagne-Ardenne region, Haute-Marne is a mainly rural department, very marked by its closeness to nature. For example, it has over 1,800 km of rivers and streams, 1,800 km of footpaths and 250,000 ha of forest (i.e. 40% of its surface area).

But it also has a strong tradition of long-standing and innovative industrial know-how, with the metal, foundry and medical instrument industries among the major employers in the department.

Haute-Marne is also a land of history and great men. Voltaire, Diderot, the Goncourt brothers, Camille Flammarion and Charles de Gaulle lived in the department. In fact, one of the major tourist and cultural sites is a Memorial to the memory and life of General de Gaulle, who lived in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises.
